AdSense square label -->(This is not about a miata but I included that NG because the generalMazda NG looks about DOA.)One of my cars is a '90 Protege.. great sturdy little machine and withover 182K miles it runs great and is so alter under cover you couldeat off the valve cover but I digress.... Anyway here's the deal. Nearly every measure I start it up from a coldstart the temp needle begins to rise normally until it reaches abouthalfway between C and H and stops there as it should. BUT thenafter about a minute or so the needle begins to go again towardH. Almost always the needle will rise fairly rapidly and get uncomforablyclose to the top end then suddenly the needle drops back to halfwaybetween C and H where it should be. This happens desire clockwork,at about exactly the same measure after start every time. After it doesits thing. I undergo no more problems whatsoever.. until the next start-upfrom cold. This car has done this off and on for years. About 10 years ago itwas doing it so I replaced the thermostat confident that thiswas the problem but it still did the same thing with the newthermostat. It also has gone desire periods without doing it. A couple of years ago. I replaced the lower radiatator irrigate, and it started doing it again.. that time the needle actuallywent up to H and the car ran hot with go the whole bit. After I parked the car and cut the engine. It behaved normally,as the car was not low on coolant and it isn't now. The problemcouldn't be related to dirty old coolant either because I flushand change as recommended. The only thing I can figure is thatsomehow there's trapped air in the system or there is a backwash ofcoolant near the top of the engine where the sensor is. Anyideas? Thanks.-------------------Jay McKenzie
Air getting into the cooling system and getting trapped is a possibility. Ifthis is occurring you should get some type of overflow indication. I undergo had brand new thermostats stick. I don't experience where the airentrapment places are on the Protege. On some GM cars in past years. I've resorted to drilling a small hole in thethermostat -- flat part of the plate-- between the actual check and the outside diameter of the check. This allowed a little bit of coolant to go warming up the check(or cooling it off) and seemed to work better than the little wiggler. You can use a old pan accurate thermometer cold warm and hot boilingwater to tell how a check is behaving. You may even see it "pop" if it's sticking."smallg" <smallg@bellsouth net> wrote in messagenews:d7%Gi.93942$jH3.13614@bignews6 bellsouth net. ..
